Dar es Salaam – President Samia Suluhu Hassan held official talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at Magogoni State House in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, January 10, 2026, in a meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.
The Chinese Foreign Minister’s official visit to Tanzania, spanning January 9-10, 2025, aimed at deepening strategic cooperation and enhancing partnership frameworks between both countries.
During the high-level discussions, President Hassan emphasized Tanzania’s dedication to maintaining and expanding its long-term strategic partnership with China, expressing gratitude for the Asian nation’s continued support and friendship.
The President outlined key priority areas including expanding market access for Tanzanian products in the Chinese market, improving the trade balance between both nations, strengthening the business and investment climate, and fostering stronger people-to-people connections.
President Hassan also highlighted Tanzania’s commitment to revitalizing the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (Tazara), emphasizing the importance of promoting economic activities linked to the railway infrastructure to drive regional development.
The Chinese Foreign Minister confirmed China’s ongoing commitment to strengthening cooperation with Tanzania and supporting the country’s development initiatives. He characterized Tazara as a historic symbol of China-Tanzania friendship, pledging Chinese support for improvements that would enhance the railway’s operational efficiency and stimulate economic growth.
Wang Yi announced that China would continue serving as a key development partner, supporting priority projects across infrastructure, water supply, clean cooking energy, concessional financing, and development assistance sectors.
Both parties reaffirmed their mutual commitment to deepening bilateral relations and strengthening multilateral and international cooperation for shared benefits.
According to the Tanzania Directorate of Presidential Communications, Chinese foreign direct investment in Tanzania reached approximately $1.7 billion last year, with trade volumes between the nations continuing upward trends.
Trade statistics reveal significant growth, with Tanzanian exports to China increasing by approximately 85 percent between 2020 and 2025. Imports from China rose by about 120 percent during the same period, partially attributed to China’s market-opening policies for African nations.
