Zanzibar Fuel Prices Fluctuate: Petrol Drops, Diesel Surges
Motorists in Zanzibar will experience mixed fuel pricing this month, with petrol prices slightly decreasing while diesel sees a significant increase. The latest regulatory review reveals key changes in the island’s fuel market.
Petrol prices have dropped by Sh18 to Sh2,978 per litre, representing a 0.60 percent decrease from the previous month. In contrast, diesel users will face a steeper price, with a litre now selling for Sh3,076 – an increase of Sh169 or 5.81 percent.
The price adjustments stem from complex factors including global oil price movements, shipping costs, and foreign exchange rate fluctuations. Kerosene remains stable at Sh3,000 per litre, while jet fuel has increased by Sh51 to Sh2,421 per litre.
Current fuel infrastructure remains a critical concern. Zanzibar’s total fuel storage capacity stands at 39 million litres, with 21 million litres stored at the Mangapwani Port and the remainder at the Mtoni depot. Regulatory authorities emphasize the need for expanded storage to ensure consistent fuel supply.
The islands currently host 102 licensed fuel stations – 87 in Unguja and 15 in Pemba. Authorities are strongly cautioning consumers to purchase fuel only from authorized stations to mitigate risks associated with substandard or smuggled fuel.
Transport stakeholders view the potential infrastructure expansion positively, believing it could help stabilize fuel prices and protect against global market volatility. The ongoing efforts aim to create a more resilient and predictable fuel ecosystem for Zanzibar’s residents and businesses.
