Tanzanian Drivers Rejoice: Fuel Prices Drop, Offering Economic Relief
Motorists across Tanzania are set to experience financial reprieve as the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) announces a significant fuel price reduction, effective Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
The price decrease stems from a combination of falling global fuel prices and favorable currency exchange rates. In Dar es Salaam, petrol now costs Sh2,885 per litre, diesel is priced at Sh2,826, and kerosene has dropped to Sh2,877 per litre.
Regional variations show slightly different pricing, with Tanga and Mtwara experiencing modest increases. Petrol in Tanga will retail at Sh2,946, while Mtwara will see prices at Sh2,978 per litre.
Global market trends reveal a substantial decline in petroleum product prices: petrol decreased by 0.9%, diesel by 3.4%, and kerosene by 3.7%. A 0.63% exchange rate reduction further contributed to the cost reduction.
Transportation sector professionals anticipate significant benefits from these price adjustments. Public service vehicles, logistics companies, and individual drivers are expected to experience reduced operational costs.
EWURA has emphasized strict compliance with the new pricing structure, warning of legal consequences for non-adherence. Petrol stations must display prices clearly and issue electronic receipts, ensuring transparency for consumers.
While the current reductions might seem modest, economic analysts suggest this could signal a positive trend towards stabilizing living costs and potentially reducing overall economic pressure.
Consumers are advised to monitor fuel prices and retain purchase receipts, contributing to a more accountable fuel distribution system.
