Tanzania Rolls Out Smart Electricity Meters with Remote Loading Capability
Dar es Salaam – The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) has introduced advanced smart electricity meters that enable customers to load power units remotely, eliminating the need to physically return home for token top-ups.
The innovative metering system promises enhanced power supply continuity and improved service reliability across the country.
The deployment comes after 18 years of comprehensive research, testing, and infrastructure upgrades designed to modernize the nation’s electricity delivery framework.
The smart devices can store up to 13 months of consumption data, provide low-balance alerts, detect payment errors, and display detailed information on electricity usage patterns.
Additional features include built-in anti-tampering mechanisms and diagnostic capabilities that assist technicians in identifying and resolving faults efficiently.
Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi emphasized that the meters will streamline operations for both residential and commercial users. "Installation is already underway nationwide. Tanesco must distribute these meters quickly, meet international safety standards, and update the system annually to maintain global standards," he stated.
Tanesco Director-General Lazaro Twange explained that the technology isolates faults to specific segments, preventing widespread power outages. "Customers generating electricity from alternative sources can use what they need and sell the surplus directly to Tanesco," he noted.
Permanent Secretary Felichesmi Mramba highlighted that the new meters are expected to reduce electricity losses from 13 percent to single digits while enabling technicians to locate power outages immediately, significantly improving response times and overall service efficiency.
"This digital upgrade transforms Tanzania’s energy sector and strengthens electricity production and distribution nationwide," Minister Ndejembi concluded.
