Zanzibar’s President Clarifies Islet Leasing Strategy to Boost Economic Development
President Samia Suluhu Hassan has addressed public concerns regarding the leasing of Zanzibar’s islets, emphasizing their critical role in driving economic growth and attracting international investment.
Speaking during the inauguration of a $40 million luxury hotel on Bawe Island, President Samia stressed that these islets are being leased, not sold, as part of a strategic development plan. The project marks the first major development among 16 government-leased islands, symbolizing Zanzibar’s commitment to economic transformation.
“These islets, once primarily used by fishermen, now represent invaluable opportunities for investment and growth,” the president explained. She urged citizens to understand the broader economic benefits of these strategic land leases.
Zanzibar’s President, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, reinforced the government’s commitment by issuing a three-month ultimatum to investors. Those who have leased islands must commence development within this timeframe or risk losing their lease to other interested parties.
The Bawe Island hotel project is expected to create 400 local jobs and position Zanzibar on the global tourism map. Dr. Mwinyi also called on local residents to acquire skills necessary for the growing hospitality sector.
“This is about continuing the revolutionary legacy of creating opportunities for our people,” President Samia emphasized, highlighting how these developments are a direct result of the ongoing efforts to empower Zanzibar’s economy.
The government remains committed to creating a favorable investment environment while ensuring that development benefits local communities and national progress.
