Breaking News: High Court Grants Additional Evidence in Controversial Diplomatic Detention Case

In a significant legal development, the High Court’s Small Claims Division in Dar es Salaam has approved a critical request by lawyers representing a former Tanzanian ambassador to submit additional evidence in an urgent Habeas Corpus motion.

The case, filed under petition number 24514/2025, seeks a court order to produce the former diplomat before the court after allegations of forcible abduction. The petition targets multiple high-ranking government officials, including the Inspector General of Police, Director of Public Prosecutions, and Attorney General.

Judge Salma Maghimbi granted the application to submit supplementary evidence and scheduled a full hearing for October 15 at 9:30 am. The legal team argued that new information necessitated further documentation, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.

According to the petition, the former ambassador was allegedly forcibly removed from his Ununio residence in Dar es Salaam in the early hours of October 6, with his current whereabouts remaining unknown. His brothers have corroborated the abduction claims, raising significant concerns about his constitutional rights and personal safety.

The court has mandated that the legal team submit an additional affidavit immediately, with respondents required to file counter-affidavits by October 14. Respondents who fail to appear will need special court permission for further submissions.

This case underscores critical questions about legal protections and transparency in governmental actions, with the court’s intervention potentially setting a precedent for addressing allegations of unlawful detention.

The legal team emphasized their commitment to ensuring constitutional rights are respected, calling for a transparent and urgent resolution to the matter.
