African Governments Urged to Leverage AI for Climate Action: A Critical Infrastructure Imperative

Experts at a recent technology forum have called for African governments to prioritize digital infrastructure and policy frameworks to unlock artificial intelligence’s (AI) potential in driving climate solutions across the continent.

The urgent plea emerged during a high-level panel discussion focusing on technological strategies to address climate challenges. Participants emphasized that Africa’s AI capabilities remain critically underutilized without coordinated data systems, inclusive funding mechanisms, and deliberate technology localization efforts.

Key challenges highlighted include fragmented data management across government ministries, limited access to capital, and the need for enabling policies that support technological innovation. Experts stressed that transforming climate and agricultural data into actionable insights requires breaking down existing institutional silos.

“Digital transformation has become fundamental to development planning,” said a leading specialist. “Investing in data centers, connectivity, and system interoperability is no longer optional—it’s essential for meaningful progress.”

The discussion underscored the importance of developing locally designed digital infrastructure that reflects African societal needs. Innovators advocated for solutions that directly address community challenges, particularly in agriculture and green energy sectors.

“Our focus must be on creating technologies that tangibly improve farmers’ lives,” one expert emphasized. “If our innovations don’t directly support food systems and local communities, we risk building irrelevant solutions.”

The forum highlighted emerging initiatives like advanced agricultural platforms powered by green energy, which integrate Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and AI analytics to support field-based operations.

Participants unanimously agreed that Africa’s climate innovation success depends on seamless collaboration between governments, international partners, and local entrepreneurs. The continued development of robust, locally-controlled digital ecosystems remains crucial in harnessing AI’s transformative potential for sustainable development.
