Zanzibar’s Presidential Candidate Promises Economic Revolution in Seafood Industry

In a bold campaign pledge, the presidential candidate for ACT-Wazalendo has committed to transforming Zanzibar’s seafood sector into a robust economic powerhouse. Speaking directly to local fishermen and fish-drying entrepreneurs in Mangapwani, the candidate emphasized the untapped potential of marine resources like seaweed and sardines.

“Sardines represent a massive business opportunity that could generate substantial income for our local communities and significantly contribute to our national economy,” the candidate stated. “Currently, foreign entities are the primary beneficiaries of our marine resources, and this must change.”

The proposed strategy includes formalizing the seafood sector, ensuring international market access, and addressing critical infrastructure challenges. Of particular concern are the traditional fish-drying methods that become nearly impossible during rainy seasons.

A key component of the proposed economic plan involves providing affordable loans to small and medium-sized enterprises dependent on marine resources. This approach aims to empower local entrepreneurs and create sustainable economic opportunities.

Local residents expressed enthusiasm about the proposed changes. One fish-drying entrepreneur noted, “This is the first time a government leader has truly listened to our challenges and offered a comprehensive vision for our industry.”

The candidate’s campaign continues with further policy engagements, signaling a potential significant shift in Zanzibar’s economic approach to marine resources and local entrepreneurship.
