Tanzania Mourns Prominent Archbishop: A Legacy of Diplomacy and Service
In a solemn tribute, the Tanzanian Catholic Church honored the late Archbishop Novatus Rugambwa, celebrating his remarkable journey of global diplomatic service and dedication to humanitarian causes.
During a requiem Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral, Archbishop Yuda Thadeus Ruwa’ichi highlighted Rugambwa’s unprecedented achievements as the first Tanzanian Vatican ambassador. His diplomatic career significantly elevated Tanzania’s international church presence across multiple continents.
Rugambwa’s humanitarian impact extended beyond diplomatic circles. He facilitated the arrival of international religious sisters who established educational institutions serving underprivileged children. A girls’ school in Makurunge now provides free education to over 1,000 students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, while a boys’ school in Dodoma offers skill-building opportunities.
Born in 1957 in Kagera, Rugambwa was ordained as a priest in 1986 and entered Vatican diplomatic service in 1991. His extensive diplomatic portfolio included significant roles across Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific, serving as Apostolic Nuncio to multiple nations.
Archbishop Ruwa’ichi used the memorial to emphasize a profound message about preserving life’s sanctity. “We must not normalize death or become desensitized to human suffering,” he cautioned, urging Tanzanians to honor Rugambwa’s commitment to compassion and peace.
The late Archbishop will be laid to rest on September 29, 2025, in his hometown of Bukoba, marking the conclusion of a distinguished career dedicated to service, diplomacy, and spiritual leadership.
