Tanzanian Archbishop Novatus Rugambwa Laid to Rest: A Legacy of Diplomatic Service
The Catholic Church mourns the loss of Archbishop Novatus Rugambwa, a distinguished Tanzanian religious leader who dedicated over three decades to ecclesiastical diplomacy. Archbishop Rugambwa passed away on September 16, 2025, in Rome, Italy, leaving behind a profound legacy of international service.
A requiem Mass was held at St. Peter’s Basilica, attended by numerous Tanzanians residing in Italy, before his remains were transported back to his home country for final rites. The Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) has announced memorial services to honor his remarkable life and contributions.
Born on October 8, 1957, in the Bukoba Diocese, Rugambwa was ordained a priest on July 6, 1986. He entered Vatican diplomatic service in 1991, serving in various diplomatic roles across multiple continents. Throughout his career, he held significant appointments, including Apostolic Nuncio to multiple countries in Africa, Central America, and the Pacific Islands.
His diplomatic journey included notable positions such as Under-Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Migrants and appointments as Apostolic Nuncio to Angola, Honduras, and New Zealand. Despite facing health challenges, Rugambwa remained committed to his ecclesiastical duties, notably attending a crucial Vatican meeting with ambassadors in June 2025.
Memorial services are scheduled, including a requiem Mass at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Dar es Salaam on September 27 and a burial Mass at Bukoba Cathedral on September 29.
Archbishop Rugambwa’s passing represents a significant loss for the global Catholic Church and Tanzania, commemorating a life of dedicated service, diplomacy, and spiritual leadership.
