Tundu Lissu Demands High-Profile Witnesses in Treason Case Preliminary Hearing
In a dramatic turn of events, Chadema national chairperson Tundu Lissu has filed a request with the High Court to summon top government leaders as witnesses in his ongoing treason case. During a preliminary hearing, Lissu formally responded to charges and outlined his defense strategy.
The political leader faces a single treason charge related to alleged statements encouraging Tanzanians to block the 2025 General Election. Lissu reportedly stated, “If they say this position signals rebellion, it’s true… because we are saying we will block the election… we will encourage rebellion.”
Lissu’s witness list includes high-profile government officials such as President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Vice President Philip Mpango, and Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa. He also named key security officials including the Inspector General of Police and the Director of Criminal Investigations.
While admitting to making the controversial statements, Lissu maintains that his remarks do not constitute a criminal offense, arguing they merely demonstrate his opposition to the current government and electoral process.
The prosecution plans to call 30 witnesses and has secured a protection order to maintain their anonymity. Lissu himself intends to call 15 witnesses but will not present documentary evidence.
The case is set for a full hearing on October 6, 2025, where the prosecution will begin presenting its evidence. The court will subsequently determine whether Lissu has a case to answer before he is called to present his defense.
