ACT-Wazalendo Challenges Electoral Commission’s Decision to Remove Presidential Candidate
In a dramatic turn of events, ACT-Wazalendo has vehemently contested the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to remove its presidential candidate from the upcoming General Election nominee list.
The party’s leadership denounced the commission’s move as a politically motivated act that undermines Tanzania’s democratic principles. Secretary-General Ado Shaibu emphasized that INEC’s decision disregards fundamental legal principles and denies justice to both the candidate and the party.
The controversy stems from an objection submitted by the Attorney General, which led to the candidate’s removal from the presidential race. ACT-Wazalendo argues that the decision is particularly problematic as it was made while a related High Court case is still pending.
“We strongly disagree with INEC’s decision,” the party statement declared. “This action appears to be a clear example of a political conspiracy that violates constitutional principles.”
The party has called an emergency meeting of its National Executive Committee to determine strategic legal and political responses. Meanwhile, they are urging political leaders and candidates to remain focused and continue campaign efforts.
The candidate in question, who recently transitioned to the opposition after being denied re-election for his parliamentary seat, now faces significant challenges to his presidential ambitions. The Attorney General’s objection centers on alleged non-compliance with electoral law requirements.
ACT-Wazalendo warns that this development threatens the credibility of the electoral process and calls for a transparent and fair resolution to the ongoing dispute.
