Tanzania Announces Groundbreaking Energy Efficiency Innovation Challenge, Awards Sh250 Million to Local Innovators
In a significant stride towards sustainable energy development, Tanzania has awarded Sh250 million to ten innovative entrepreneurs through the second Energy Efficiency Innovation Challenge. The initiative is a critical component of Tanzania’s first Energy Efficiency Action Plan (2022–2025) and supports the newly adopted National Energy Efficiency Strategy (2024–2034).
The nationwide competition attracted 95 applications, with ten promising innovators selected to receive up to Sh25 million each. These innovators will develop solutions in key areas including energy-efficient appliances, sustainable building practices, and innovative behavior-change models.
Key highlights of the challenge include groundbreaking projects like Ubuntu GreenPower+, which provides solar-powered systems for healthcare clinics, and an advanced energy monitoring system that helps users optimize electricity consumption through smart technologies.
Speaking at the event, government representatives emphasized that energy efficiency is not just about reducing consumption, but about creating opportunities for innovation, job creation, and sustainable industrialization. The initiative specifically aims to empower youth and women in shaping Tanzania’s energy future.
The selected innovations demonstrate remarkable potential to address critical energy challenges, offering solutions that range from green energy for healthcare facilities to intelligent energy management systems. These projects are expected to contribute significantly to Tanzania’s national development goals and global climate objectives.
Innovators will receive technical mentorship alongside financial support, ensuring the practical implementation and scalability of their solutions. This approach underscores Tanzania’s commitment to fostering local innovation and driving sustainable energy transformation.
