Zanzibar Launches Revolutionary Digital Address System, Processes Nearly 490,000 Applications

In a significant digital transformation, Zanzibar has successfully implemented a groundbreaking digital address identity system, processing 489,409 online applications within just two months of launch. The innovative system, introduced on June 15, 2025, requires applicants to submit residential letters digitally, marking a pivotal moment in the region’s technological advancement.

During the National Address Programme launch, government officials highlighted the system’s potential to streamline service delivery, enhance economic growth, and improve national security. The initiative eliminates the traditional need for citizens to visit local offices, providing a more efficient and accessible approach to address identification.

Key highlights of the digital address system include:

– 450,124 addresses already established across Zanzibar’s streets and plots
– Plans to equip 21,487 officials with digital tablets
– Comprehensive coverage spanning regional, council, ward, and village levels
– Strategic focus on integrating digital systems with postal, emergency, and financial networks

Government leaders emphasized the system’s broader implications, noting it will support urban development, tourism, and overall economic expansion. The initiative represents a critical step towards creating a more connected and technologically advanced administrative infrastructure.

The government is committed to full implementation, with plans to complete 388 sheha offices by 2026, further supporting the digital transformation. Citizens are encouraged to register and obtain their digital residential addresses as the system continues to roll out across the region.
