University of Iringa Commends High Court Division for Two Decades of Enhanced Justice Delivery

Iringa – The University of Iringa (UoI) has praised the High Court of Tanzania, Iringa Division, for its two-decade commitment to improving access to justice and delivering judicial services closer to communities throughout the region.

During a December 11, 2025 visit to the institution—part of the court’s 20th anniversary celebrations—the representative of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Advocate Kaleb Lameck Gamaya, highlighted how the division’s establishment in 2005 significantly reduced the burden on citizens and legal practitioners who previously traveled long distances to access judicial services.

The presence of the High Court in Iringa has substantially reduced costs and waiting times for litigants while enhancing practical training opportunities for law students, according to Advocate Gamaya.

Over 70 percent of UoI’s law students now depend on the division for their clinical legal education, eliminating the need for students to travel to Songea or Mbeya for court exposure.

"In the past, both citizens and students had to undertake long journeys to access judicial services. Today, cases are heard locally, expenses have decreased, and the backlog of cases has reduced considerably," he stated.

The visit is part of a series of activities commemorating the court’s 20th anniversary. Advocate Gamaya encouraged the public to utilize free legal clinics jointly offered by UoI and judicial stakeholders. The university has recently expanded its Legal Aid Unit, which now assists residents facing various legal challenges, including land disputes, inheritance matters, child maintenance issues, employment concerns, and family-related conflicts.

"We are committed to ensuring that citizens receive legal education and that those unable to afford legal representation are not denied access to justice," Advocate Gamaya emphasized.

The Iringa High Court Zone’s 20th anniversary celebrations continue with community outreach initiatives, public legal awareness programmes, and engagements with legal and academic institutions designed to strengthen collaboration and enhance justice delivery.
