22-Year-Old Man Arrested for Alleged Rape of 80-Year-Old Grandmother in Songwe
Songwe – Police in Songwe Region have arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of raping and injuring his 80-year-old grandmother in a shocking incident that has rocked the local community.
Obadia Mpenzu, a resident of Majimoto Hamlet in Nanyala Village, Mbozi District, is currently in police custody following the alleged attack.
Songwe Regional Police Commander Augustino Senga confirmed the arrest of the suspect.
The incident occurred on the night of December 8, 2025, according to Nanyala Village Chairman Maneno Mwambunga.
The suspect allegedly committed the violent act after arriving at his grandmother’s home at around 10:00 pm while her husband was away at a local bar.
Following the attack, Mpenzu fled to an unknown location, prompting village leaders to launch an extensive search operation.
The manhunt continued until approximately 11:00 am on December 9, 2025, when authorities located the suspect hiding in a forested area.
"The suspect was found hiding in the bush in a weak condition and was vomiting. It is alleged that he had taken poison in an attempt to end his life after regretting his actions," Mwambunga stated.
The victim is receiving medical treatment while police continue their investigation into the case.
