Mwanza Regional Commissioner Calls on Graduates to Submit Business Ideas for Government Funding
Mwanza – Regional Commissioner Said Mtanda has called on unemployed graduates to take initiative by submitting their business proposals to government offices for funding consideration, emphasizing that opportunities are readily available.
Speaking on December 6, 2025, at a capacity-building forum in Ilemela District, Mtanda addressed over 500 graduates from universities, colleges, and vocational institutions in Mwanza. The forum was designed to equip participants with essential skills, opportunities, and guidance while helping authorities identify local graduates and determine effective support mechanisms.
The Regional Commissioner highlighted that many young people face minor obstacles that, once addressed, could significantly improve their prospects. He encouraged graduates to present their project proposals to public offices for evaluation and potential support.
The initiative specifically targets young graduates seeking self-employment but lacking the necessary skills, capital, or resources to launch their ventures.
"The government wants to support you with knowledge, guidance, and access to opportunities so the private sector can fill employment gaps for youth," Mtanda stated. "Many graduates have completed various levels of education, but the government does not have information on them. We need to identify graduates to understand how to reach them."
He announced plans to develop a comprehensive database to track graduates and provide ongoing guidance.
Mtanda stressed the government’s commitment to collaborating with the private sector to create enabling environments that reduce youth unemployment. He assured attendees that the forum concentrated solely on entrepreneurship opportunities.
Several participants voiced concerns regarding youth loan programs. David George of Buswelu requested an extension of the loan application deadline beyond December 19 and suggested prioritizing first-time applicants, noting that some groups repeatedly access funding.
Ndongo Makina, a 2024 law graduate from St Augustine University of Tanzania, shared his success story of establishing a fish-farming business with a Sh100 million loan, urging fellow graduates to capitalize on available opportunities.
Mohamed Atiki, Head of Social Development for Ilemela District, reported that the municipality allocated Sh1.6 billion for youth programs in 2024/25, including Sh425 million for loans. For the current year, Sh1.2 billion has been earmarked, with Sh483 million designated for youth loans. The application deadline remains December 19.
