President Samia Suluhu Hassan Unveils Ambitious Development Plan for Lake Zone Region
In a powerful campaign rally at Nyamagana grounds, President Samia Suluhu Hassan outlined a comprehensive strategy to transform the Lake Zone into Tanzania’s commercial powerhouse, focusing on five critical sectors: agriculture, health, education, energy, and transport.
Highlighting significant investments, the President revealed that Mwanza has received approximately 5.6 trillion shillings in development projects over the past five years, with many already completed or nearing completion.
Healthcare Transformation
President Hassan emphasized healthcare improvements, showcasing major investments in regional referral hospitals. At Sekou-Toure Hospital, a five-story maternal and child block worth 10.1 billion shillings has been constructed, significantly reducing maternal and child mortality rates. The Bugando Medical Centre received over 9 billion shillings in upgrades, including a new cancer treatment block and advanced medical equipment.
Education and Skills Development
The government has expanded educational opportunities through free education and skills training. Three VETA colleges have been established in Magu, Misungwi, and Buchosa, providing practical skills for youth employment. A new sports college in Malya received an investment of 34 billion shillings to nurture talent and produce national coaches.
Infrastructure and Economic Growth
Key infrastructure projects are set to revolutionize the region’s economic landscape. The Kigongo–Busisi Bridge, worth 700 billion shillings, is now Tanzania’s longest bridge, connecting communities more efficiently. The Mwanza–Isaka Standard Gauge Railway, a 314km section worth 3 trillion shillings, will boost regional trade.
