Zanzibar Gears Up for Controversial Early Voting in Upcoming General Election

Zanzibar is bracing for a heated political debate surrounding early voting in the October 29, 2025 General Election, with political parties sharply divided over the electoral process.

The upcoming polls will see voters elect the President of Zanzibar, Members of the House of Representatives, Members of Parliament, and local councillors. According to the Zanzibar Election Act of 2018, voting will occur over two days, with October 28 dedicated to early voting for election officials and security personnel.

While the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) maintains that early voting is legally mandated, political parties have expressed contrasting views on the process. Opposition parties argue the method could potentially compromise electoral integrity, while ruling party supporters defend its legal foundation.

The ruling party has strongly defended early voting, warning against any attempts to disrupt the process. They emphasize that the electoral law clearly outlines the early voting procedures and that any challenges should be addressed through proper legislative channels.

Election officials have assured stakeholders that comprehensive preparations are underway to ensure a transparent and smooth voting process. They stress that early voting is designed to facilitate participation for those directly involved in managing the election.

Political analysts suggest the debate reflects deeper tensions surrounding electoral trust and governance in Zanzibar, highlighting the complex political landscape of the archipelago.

As the election date approaches, all eyes are on how political parties will navigate this contentious issue and ensure a fair and peaceful electoral process.
