Tanzania’s President Unveils Ambitious Southern Development Strategy
President Samia Suluhu Hassan has revealed a comprehensive development plan for southern Tanzania, centering on a transformative 1,000-kilometre Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project connecting Mtwara to Mbamba Bay.
The proposed railway line represents a strategic economic corridor designed to revolutionize regional trade and connectivity. Passing through agriculturally productive regions and key economic zones like Liganga and Mchuchuma, the project aims to attract significant investment and strengthen economic ties with neighboring countries.
Key infrastructure developments highlighted include:
1. Mbamba Bay Port Project
– 80% complete
– Expected full operational status by January 2026
– Will serve as headquarters for eight Lake Nyasa ports
– Alternative trade route for Malawi and Zambia
2. Infrastructure Investments
– 66-kilometre Mbinga–Mbamba Bay road
– Upgraded Ndumbi Port with increased cargo and passenger capacity
– Plans for multiple all-weather roads
– Bridge construction over Lumeme River
Economic Empowerment Initiatives:
– Crop value-addition factories in every district
– Fish-drying plant and coffee huller
– Modern agricultural extension services
– Support for fishing sector
– Subsidized agricultural inputs
– Enhanced crop market strategies
The president emphasized her commitment to economic diplomacy, stating that true regional development requires reciprocal investment and flourishing trade across borders.
These ambitious projects aim to create substantial youth employment opportunities and drive economic transformation in southern Tanzania.
