Tanzania Launches New SGR Shuttle Service to Enhance Regional Transportation

Dar es Salaam – Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) is set to revolutionize regional transportation with a groundbreaking shuttle service connecting Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) stations in Dodoma and Morogoro, promising improved mobility and economic opportunities.

Launching on September 15, 2025, the innovative transport initiative aims to provide passengers with reliable, safe, and efficient travel options. Local transport operators, including bajaji drivers, have welcomed the new service, viewing it as a complementary solution rather than competition.

The strategic partnership focuses on creating seamless connectivity between SGR stations and key urban destinations. In Morogoro, shuttle stops will include Viwandani, Msamvu Bus Terminal, Masika, and the Old Bus Stand. Dodoma routes will cover Nanenane Bus Terminal, Machinga Complex, and Shoppers Plaza.

With a competitive fare of 5,000 Tanzanian shillings per passenger, the service is expected to significantly enhance regional transportation infrastructure. The fleet will feature buses with varying capacities, ranging from 30 to 50 seats, capable of transporting up to 180 passengers in Morogoro and 472 in Dodoma per trip.

The initiative is projected to create 61 direct jobs, including positions for drivers, supervisors, and attendants. By integrating private sector expertise, the government demonstrates its commitment to developing robust, efficient transportation networks.

Local transport operators like bajaji drivers are optimistic about the new service. “The SGR attracts more passengers than traditional buses can accommodate,” said a local driver. “This will help us grow our businesses by meeting increased transportation demands.”

This forward-thinking approach aligns with national strategies to improve public transportation, create economic opportunities, and support regional development.
