National Environment Management Council Launches Comprehensive Nationwide Cleanliness Campaign
Tanzania is set to transform its environmental landscape through an ambitious nationwide initiative targeting comprehensive waste management and ecological preservation. The Nemc Usafi Campaign 2025 aims to mobilize 80 percent of households by December 2025, focusing on critical environmental sustainability goals.
The comprehensive campaign, themed “Our Environment, Our Life – Let Us Protect It to Protect Ourselves,” targets multiple critical areas including reducing indiscriminate waste disposal, promoting recycling, and creating green job opportunities. A key objective is establishing environmental clubs in every primary and secondary school by June 2026.
Current waste generation statistics reveal a significant challenge, with Tanzania producing an estimated 14.4 to 20.7 million tonnes of waste annually. This translates to approximately 0.66–0.95 kilograms per person daily, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated environmental management strategies.
The initiative will implement multi-faceted approaches including:
– Mass awareness campaigns
– National clean-up operations
– Inter-school cleanliness competitions
– Community green space creation
– Tree-planting exercises
– Eco-friendly product exhibitions
Medical waste management is also a priority, with recent guidelines requiring hospitals to install burning chambers, significantly reducing environmental contamination from healthcare facilities.
The campaign represents a critical step towards sustainable development, environmental protection, and public health improvement across Tanzania.
