High Court Upholds 30-Year Sentence for Armed Robbery of Gold Carbon Worth Sh109 Million
In a landmark ruling, the High Court’s Musoma Zone has confirmed the 30-year prison sentence for two individuals convicted of a brazen armed robbery in the Mara Region.
Maneno Chanila, nicknamed “Professor”, and Joseph Daud were originally sentenced by the Butiama District Court for a robbery that occurred on April 7, 2024, at Magunga Village. The crime involved stealing gold carbon valued at Sh109 million from victim Patrick Ryoba.
During the incident, the criminals violently assaulted a man named Joh with machetes, additionally stealing Sh85,000 in cash and three mobile phones from Chacha Wambura.
The appellants challenged their conviction on seven grounds, arguing insufficient evidence and questioning the trial court’s reliance on caution statements. However, Justice Marlin Komba dismissed their appeal, emphasizing the strength of the prosecution’s case.
Notably, DNA evidence played a crucial role in linking one of the convicts to the crime scene. The judge ruled that the 30-year sentence was appropriate under Section 287A of the Penal Code, which mandates a minimum 30-year term for armed robbery.
The decisive judgment sends a strong message about the consequences of violent criminal activities and reinforces the legal system’s commitment to protecting citizens’ property and safety.
