Tanzania Accelerates Clean Cooking Revolution with Innovative Market Solutions
Tanzania is making significant strides in clean cooking technology, implementing groundbreaking solutions that promise to transform energy consumption in local markets and improve overall environmental and health conditions.
In a landmark initiative, a new bulk LPG distribution system has been launched at the Ferry Fish Market, introducing prepaid technology that allows traders to pay only for the gas they consume. This innovative approach eliminates traditional cylinder-based cooking methods and reduces daily operational costs for vendors.
Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Doto Biteko highlighted the national strategy, emphasizing that the Msalato market will serve as a model for markets across Tanzania. “Our goal is to encourage clean cooking in high-traffic areas while maintaining the traditional market atmosphere,” he stated.
Key highlights of the clean cooking transformation include:
– Increased clean cooking energy usage from 6.9% in 2022 to 20.3% in 2025
– Projected target of 80% clean energy adoption by 2034
– Improved health outcomes for food vendors
– Significant reduction in daily cooking expenses
– Environmental benefits through reduced charcoal and firewood consumption
The new system features underground gas tanks connected to 48 stoves with prepaid meters and emergency shut-off valves. Traders can expect to save up to 45,000 Tanzanian shillings daily compared to traditional cooking methods.
Government officials are optimistic about the initiative, with leaders noting that the project not only improves infrastructure but also transforms safety, efficiency, and overall well-being for market vendors.
The clean cooking program represents a critical step towards sustainable urban development and demonstrates Tanzania’s commitment to innovative energy solutions.
