Zanzibar General Election: Key Dates and Preparations Revealed
The Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) has announced critical details for the upcoming general election, confirming the official election timetable will be released on August 18. This announcement follows the expected dissolution of the House of Representatives on August 13, in strict adherence to the 2018 Election Act.
ZEC Director of Elections confirmed that the official announcement will comprehensively outline the election calendar, including crucial details such as nomination form collection and candidate submission dates. A significant milestone in the electoral process will be the election campaign code of conduct signing on August 24, which will be symbolically preceded by a peace march from Kikwajuni to ZEC headquarters.
During a capacity-building program for district election supervisors, ZEC Chairperson emphasized the critical role of supervisors in maintaining electoral integrity. “Elections are more than political events; they are fundamental to shaping peace, development, and national unity,” the Chairperson stated.
The training session underscored the importance of supervisors as the primary interface between the electoral commission and the public. Officials were urged to demonstrate exemplary ethics, discipline, and accountability while managing electoral procedures with utmost fairness and impartiality.
The comprehensive training program aims to equip supervisors with extensive knowledge of electoral laws, regulations, and guidelines, ensuring they can effectively oversee voting, counting, and tallying processes in their respective regions.
As Zanzibar prepares for this significant democratic exercise, the Electoral Commission remains committed to conducting a transparent and credible election that reflects the will of the people.
