Tanzania Unveils $110 Million East Africa Commercial and Logistics Centre, Set to Revolutionize Regional Trade
Dar es Salaam is preparing to launch a groundbreaking $110 million commercial and logistics centre that promises to transform the region’s economic landscape. The East Africa Commercial and Logistics Centre (EACLC) is set to be officially inaugurated on August 2, with President Samia Suluhu Hassan presiding over the ceremony.
The state-of-the-art facility spans 75,000 square metres at the former Ubungo Bus Terminal, featuring 2,060 modern shops and office spaces. It is projected to generate over 15,000 formal jobs and create more than 50,000 informal employment opportunities, marking a significant economic milestone for Tanzania.
Key economic benefits of the project include:
– Generating $8.19 million in direct annual government revenue
– Projected $150 million in foreign exchange earnings
– Stimulating local economic activities
– Enhancing urban infrastructure
– Strengthening international trade relations
The centre currently boasts a 60-70% occupancy rate, with monthly rental spaces starting at competitive rates. Its strategic location is expected to position Dar es Salaam as a critical gateway for Eastern African trade, offering unprecedented opportunities for local and international investors.
“This is a game-changing integrated facility built to international standards for logistics, trade, and investment,” highlighted a senior official. The project aims to equip young professionals with skills needed for the modern economy and drive Tanzania’s economic prosperity.
The 32-year contract is anticipated to significantly increase the value of surrounding areas, with local authorities expecting to collect approximately 1 billion in annual fees and levies to support infrastructure and social services.
As Tanzania continues to position itself as a regional trade and investment hub, the EACLC represents a bold step towards economic transformation and regional integration.
