Zanzibar Sees Sharp Rise in Road Fatalities: 17 Lives Lost in June
Zanzibar has experienced a significant increase in road accidents and fatalities during June 2025, with traffic-related incidents rising dramatically compared to the previous month. The number of road deaths climbed to 17, representing a 13.3 percent increase from May’s 15 fatalities.
Statistical data reveals a stark surge in road accidents, jumping 71.4 percent from 14 cases in May to 24 in June. North A District emerged as a critical hotspot, accounting for 16.7 percent of all recorded incidents during the month.
Preliminary analysis points to reckless driving, particularly among motorcycle taxi operators, as the primary cause of these accidents. Speeding and general negligence remain the most significant risk factors contributing to the rising road safety concerns.
District-wise breakdown shows North B and Central Districts recording the highest number of fatalities, with four deaths each in June. The number of road-related injuries also increased to 21, up from 19 in the previous month—a 10.2 percent rise.
Local authorities are calling for enhanced community involvement and greater personal responsibility among road users. Law enforcement emphasizes the urgent need for improved road safety awareness and stricter adherence to traffic regulations.
Experts recommend a comprehensive approach involving public education, targeted enforcement, and continued implementation of road-use guidelines to address the growing road safety challenge in Zanzibar.
