Zanzibar Tourism Soars: 67,496 International Arrivals Mark Significant Growth in June 2025

Zanzibar’s tourism sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience, recording a remarkable 30.9 percent surge in international arrivals in June 2025, with 67,496 visitors compared to the previous year. The destination has seen an impressive 82.2 percent increase from May 2025, signaling strong recovery and growing global interest.

European markets continue to dominate, representing 62 percent of total visitors. Germany leads the pack with 9.4 percent of arrivals, followed by the United Kingdom at 7.7 percent and France at 7.5 percent. The African market remains robust, with South Africa contributing 3,476 visitors and Kenya sending 1,882 travelers.

Air connectivity proves crucial, with 91.1 percent of tourists arriving through Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. Of the total arrivals, 50,372 came on international flights, while 11,087 arrived via domestic routes. The seaport welcomed 6,037 visitors, including 71 cruise passengers.

Leisure remains the primary motivation, with an overwhelming 99.2 percent of visitors arriving for holiday purposes. The tourist demographic shows a near-equal gender split, with 52.3 percent male and 47.7 percent female travelers. Notably, female visitor numbers surged by 98.7 percent from the previous month.

Emerging markets display promising growth, with countries like Poland, India, Russia, Israel, China, and Ukraine showing a 59.2 percent increase compared to June 2024. This indicates a diversifying and expanding tourism landscape for the destination.

The average stay is seven days, with 28.4 percent of visitors spending exactly one week. The hospitality sector maintained a 54.4 percent bed occupancy rate, providing 913,911 bed spaces and occupying 497,110 beds.

Tourism officials express optimism, viewing these figures as a positive indicator for economic growth, job creation, and Zanzibar’s positioning as a premier African tourist destination.
