Zanzibar Boosts Blue Economy with 2.5 Million Fingerlings Production
Zanzibar has achieved a significant milestone in marine resource development, producing 2.5 million fingerlings of fish and sea cucumbers to strengthen its blue economy and create new economic opportunities for local communities.
The comprehensive marine cultivation initiative has strategically distributed 1 million fingerlings in Pemba and 1.5 million in Unguja, with 26,000 already allocated to 310 fish farmers. This targeted approach aims to support sustainable marine resource utilization and entrepreneurial growth.
Key highlights of the marine cultivation program include:
– 22,000 sea cucumber fingerlings distributed in Unguja
– 4,000 fish fingerlings distributed in Pemba
– Implementation aligned with 2022 Blue Economy Policy
– Management plans developed for marine protected areas
– Investment permits issued for four marine projects
The program has also witnessed remarkable growth in seaweed production, experiencing a substantial 124.6 percent increase from 8,785 tonnes in 2020 to 19,716 tonnes in 2024. Farmers have received critical support including boats, farming tools, and specialized training.
Marine experts encourage communities to explore emerging aquaculture opportunities, particularly in high-demand species like sea cucumbers. The initiative represents a strategic approach to economic diversification and sustainable marine resource management.
As part of the “Inuka na Blue Economy” program, 1,031 boats have been distributed, with 227 being deep-sea vessels, further empowering local fishing communities and expanding maritime economic potential.
