Zanzibar Revenue Authority Surpasses Annual Collection Target, Signals Strong Economic Growth
Zanzibar’s revenue collection has dramatically exceeded expectations for the 2024/25 financial year, with the Zanzibar Revenue Authority (ZRA) collecting Sh861.88 billion against a projected Sh845.98 billion.
The remarkable achievement represents a 101.88 percent performance, marking a significant milestone in the region’s economic development. Revenue collections demonstrated a substantial 19.91 percent increase compared to the previous financial year, translating to an additional Sh143.12 billion in total revenue.
Key highlights of the fiscal performance include:
– Fourth quarter collections reached Sh194.10 billion, surpassing the targeted Sh188.16 billion
– June 2025 revenue collections hit Sh63.67 billion, exceeding the monthly target by 112.40 percent
– Year-on-year growth showed a 30.22 percent increase from the previous June
The strong performance is attributed to several critical factors:
– Increased economic activities between Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania
– Implementation of sound government economic policies
– Enhanced tax collection strategies
– Adoption of modern digital technologies
Looking forward, the ZRA has set an ambitious revenue collection target of Sh1.257 trillion for the 2025/26 financial year. To achieve this goal, the authority will implement strategic measures, including:
– Offering tax penalty waivers for outstanding debts
– Conducting extensive public education campaigns
– Promoting voluntary tax compliance
These developments signal robust economic growth and increasing financial sophistication in Zanzibar’s revenue management approach.
