Tanzania Calls for Safer Maritime Workplaces: Protecting Seafarers’ Rights and Dignity

In a landmark statement, national maritime leaders have emphasized the critical need to create safer, more inclusive working environments for seafarers, with special focus on protecting women’s rights and professional opportunities.

Government officials urged shipowners to establish comprehensive mechanisms to prevent harassment, promote gender equality, and ensure dignified working conditions aboard vessels. Speaking during the International Day of the Seafarer commemorations, maritime authorities stressed the importance of implementing robust safety protocols and supporting seafarer welfare.

Key recommendations include:

– Developing effective systems to prevent and respond to workplace harassment
– Prioritizing professional handling of issues affecting female seafarers
– Ensuring compliance with Maritime Labour Convention standards
– Providing fair employment contracts, decent accommodation, and occupational safety

The maritime sector was highlighted as a crucial component of the Blue Economy, offering expansive opportunities in shipbuilding, marine equipment manufacturing, sustainable fishing, and strategic tourism. Authorities encouraged young professionals of all genders to explore maritime career paths.

Addressing ongoing challenges, maritime leaders acknowledged the current shortage of skilled seafarers, particularly those with mid and high-level technical expertise. The call to action emphasizes creating supportive, inclusive work environments that attract and retain talent across the maritime industry.

The initiative underscores Tanzania’s commitment to transforming maritime workplaces into safe, respectful, and professional environments that uphold fundamental human rights and promote gender equality.
