Zanzibar’s 10th House of Representatives Set to Dissolve After Transformative Five-Year Term
Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Mwinyi is poised to formally dissolve the 10th House of Representatives on Monday, June 23, 2025, concluding a significant five-year legislative period marked by notable achievements and challenges.
The House, inaugurated on November 11, 2020, will conclude its term in strict adherence to Article 92(1) of the Zanzibar Constitution, which mandates a five-year legislative cycle from its first sitting.
During its tenure, the House experienced significant milestones, including the loss of three representatives. The legislative body processed 42 bills and eight private members’ motions, with lawmakers submitting an impressive 2,558 primary and 5,497 supplementary questions.
The House operated under the Government of National Unity (GNU), a unique power-sharing arrangement between major political parties designed to promote stability and national cohesion in Zanzibar.
A dissolution ceremony will include a ceremonial parade, a presidential address, and a farewell reception honoring the outgoing lawmakers. The event will symbolize the transition to the next electoral cycle and celebrate the legislative achievements of the past five years.
“President Mwinyi is expected to address the nation during the final session and subsequently announce the House’s dissolution,” confirming the formal conclusion of this legislative term.
The dissolution represents a pivotal moment in Zanzibar’s democratic process, marking the end of a collaborative and productive parliamentary session.
