Zanzibar Advances Plans for National Airline to Boost Tourism and Regional Connectivity
Zanzibar is making significant strides towards establishing its own national airline, with high-level discussions currently underway to transform the region’s air transportation landscape. Government officials have revealed advanced negotiations aimed at creating a strategic air service that will enhance island connectivity and tourism potential.
During a recent parliamentary session in Chukwani, government representatives confirmed ongoing discussions with potential international partners to develop a comprehensive airline strategy. The initiative is designed to address long-standing transportation challenges and expand regional air travel capabilities.
The proposed national carrier will specifically focus on improving inter-island transportation, with immediate plans to introduce scheduled flights connecting Unguja and Pemba. A specialized aircraft capable of carrying 50 passengers has already completed preliminary test flights at Pemba Airport, signaling imminent operational readiness.
Current passenger data indicates substantial demand, with Pemba Airport currently serving between 90,000 and 100,000 travelers annually. The 2023/24 financial year saw 97,375 passengers, with a slight decrease to 94,907 in the subsequent period.
Legislators have strongly advocated for improved air services, emphasizing the critical need for reliable and consistent transportation options. The government’s commitment to launching regular flights by July 2025 represents a significant milestone in addressing regional mobility challenges.
This strategic aviation development is expected to play a crucial role in boosting Zanzibar’s tourism sector, attracting international travelers, and supporting local economic growth. The proposed national airline symbolizes a forward-thinking approach to regional transportation and economic development.
