Zanzibar’s Innovative Travel Insurance Scheme Generates Over $20 Million in First Six Months
The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has successfully implemented a mandatory travel insurance initiative that has collected more than $20 million since its launch in October 2024. The innovative scheme requires all international visitors to pay a $44 insurance fee upon entry, covering a comprehensive range of risks including medical emergencies, potential document loss, and unforeseen incidents.
During the first six months of implementation, only $1.59 million was utilized for emergency services, demonstrating the program’s efficiency and strategic financial management. The policy provides critical support for tourists, ensuring immediate assistance during unexpected situations.
Key highlights of the insurance scheme include:
– Coverage of medical emergencies, evacuations, and repatriations
– Specific cases of support, including medical treatment for injured tourists
– Repatriation services for tourists from multiple countries who experienced critical incidents
Recognizing regional dynamics, the government has reduced the insurance fee to $22 for East African Community member states, promoting regional integration and facilitating easier travel.
While a significant portion of the collected funds remains unspent, authorities emphasize that the insurance pool is strategically maintained to ensure immediate and comprehensive support during potential emergencies.
This groundbreaking approach demonstrates Zanzibar’s commitment to tourist safety and innovative risk management in the tourism sector.
