Breaking News: CCM Accuses ACT-Wazalendo of Electoral Interference in Zanzibar
Tensions are rising in Zanzibar as the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), strongly condemns ACT-Wazalendo for allegedly interfering with the voter registration process. The party’s special committee secretary has raised serious concerns about unauthorized voter registration announcements.
CCM officials argue that ACT-Wazalendo’s deputy leader overstepped legal boundaries by prematurely releasing voter registration statistics before the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) could make an official statement. The ruling party claims these actions are deliberately designed to create confusion and undermine the electoral process.
According to CCM, the controversial announcement of 99,723 registered voters across Unguja and Pemba regions lacks official verification. Party representatives highlighted that ACT-Wazalendo agents were absent from numerous registration stations, calling into question the credibility of their reported figures.
The party is urging ZEC to take swift action, referencing Election Law No. 4 of 2018, which prohibits unauthorized interference with the commission’s work. Potential penalties for such violations could include substantial fines or imprisonment.
“We have built a democratic nation founded on justice and the rule of law,” CCM officials emphasized, calling for strict enforcement of electoral regulations to prevent potential electoral misconduct.
As the October elections approach, this controversy underscores the growing political tensions in Zanzibar, with both parties presenting competing narratives about the voter registration process.
