Zanzibar Marks Record-Breaking Fuel Imports During Revolution Celebrations
Zanzibar experienced an unprecedented surge in fuel imports, reaching a historic high of 28 million litres in January 2025. This remarkable milestone coincided with the 61st anniversary celebrations of the Zanzibar Revolution, which significantly contributed to the increased fuel demand.
The Zanzibar Revenue Authority (ZRA) reported exceeding its monthly revenue collection target, raising Sh81.512 billion against a projected Sh80.984 billion. The fuel import spike was directly linked to the month-long festivities, which included a grand parade in Gombani Pemba and the launch of over 194 development projects.
Typical monthly fuel consumption usually hovers around 20.5 million litres, comprising nine million litres of petrol, seven million litres of diesel, and approximately four million litres of aviation fuel. The January figures represent a substantial departure from standard consumption patterns.
Accompanying the increased imports, fuel prices saw a modest increase in February 2025. Petrol prices rose to Sh2,819 per litre, a 1.58 percent increase from January, while diesel climbed to Sh2,945 per litre, representing a 1.83 percent uptick. Aviation fuel experienced a slight 0.39 percent increase, reaching Sh2,423 per litre.
Price variations are attributed to multiple factors, including global fuel price fluctuations, higher importation costs, and exchange rate dynamics, particularly between the US Dollar and Tanzanian shilling. These changes reflect the complex economic landscape influencing fuel pricing and consumption in the region.
The record-breaking fuel imports highlight Zanzibar’s economic activity and the significant scale of the Revolution anniversary celebrations, demonstrating the island’s vibrant economic and cultural momentum.
