Zanzibar Revenue Authority Smashes Record with Sh81.5 Billion January Collection
Zanzibar’s financial landscape has been dramatically transformed as the Zanzibar Revenue Authority (ZRA) announced an unprecedented revenue collection of Sh81.512 billion in January 2025, surpassing initial projections and marking a historic milestone in the region’s economic performance.
The remarkable achievement represents a substantial 16.15 percent growth from the previous year’s January collection of Sh70.180 billion. ZRA’s Acting Commissioner highlighted this breakthrough, emphasizing that the revenue has for the first time transitioned from seven to eight digits.
Key factors driving this exceptional performance include enhanced tax enforcement strategies, robust government policies, and accelerated development projects. The successful implementation of electronic tax collection systems and digital receipts has significantly contributed to improved taxpayer compliance.
The revenue surge coincides with the 61st anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution, during which over 190 development projects were launched across Unguja and Pemba. This period of economic activity has been instrumental in driving increased revenue collection.
For the first seven months of the 2024/25 financial year, ZRA has already collected Sh510.545 billion, exceeding the estimated Sh500.187 billion and representing a 21 percent increase from the previous year.
While celebrating this achievement, local traders and residents acknowledge potential for further growth, suggesting continued enforcement and engagement could further enhance revenue collection efforts.
The unprecedented financial performance signals a promising economic trajectory for Zanzibar, reflecting the effectiveness of the Eighth Government’s economic strategies and commitment to fiscal development.
