Zanzibar Opposition Party Demands Electoral Reforms Ahead of 2025 Elections
In a bold stance, the Chadema party’s vice chairman has firmly reiterated the critical need for comprehensive electoral reforms before the upcoming national elections. Speaking at a key party meeting, the leadership emphasized that credible elections can only be achieved through significant legal and systemic changes.
The party’s core demands include removing district executive directors from their roles as returning officers, arguing that their direct presidential appointments compromise electoral integrity. The leadership stressed the importance of conducting free and fair elections where winners are determined by law, not manipulation.
Addressing potential coalition strategies, the party expressed openness to collaborating with other opposition parties, but emphasized that any alliance must be built on mutual respect and disciplined political engagement. The party’s leadership is committed to conducting civilized campaigns that maintain political credibility.
With the 2025 elections viewed as a critical moment, Chadema is focused on strengthening its presence in Zanzibar and challenging the current political establishment. The party has outlined strategic plans, including deploying agents during voter registration processes in both Unguja and Pemba regions.
The leadership also called for internal party unity, urging members to move past previous divisions and concentrate on their collective electoral objectives. They argue that a strong political party is founded on committed and united supporters.
As tensions rise, the upcoming elections are positioned as a significant test for Chadema’s political strategy and its ability to challenge the long-standing political dominance in the region.
