Dar es Salaam Port Achieves Remarkable Efficiency, Slashes Shipping Costs and Boosts Trade Capacity
Business leaders have praised significant improvements at the Dar es Salaam Port, highlighting transformative changes that are revolutionizing Tanzania’s maritime trade infrastructure.
The port has dramatically reduced transportation costs, cutting container shipping expenses from $8,000 to $3,500, a move that promises substantial economic benefits for local businesses. These advancements have already yielded impressive results, with the port handling 12.8 million tonnes of cargo in just six months.
Key performance metrics demonstrate substantial progress. Cargo handling time has been compressed from 10 days to merely 3 days, while monthly cargo volume has surged to approximately two million tonnes, projecting an annual capacity of 24 million tonnes. Vessel congestion has also significantly decreased, dropping from 40-50 daily ships to just 18.
The port’s revenue collection has reached an unprecedented milestone, exceeding 1 trillion Tanzanian shillings monthly for the first time. These developments align with the national vision to establish Tanzania as a premier transport and trade hub in Africa.
Business community leaders emphasized that these improvements will inspire increased entrepreneurial engagement and trade activities. The port’s enhanced efficiency is expected to attract more businesses and potentially redirect shipping operations from other regional ports.
Government officials remain committed to further optimizing port operations, with ongoing plans to expedite services and integrate multimodal transportation systems encompassing ports, railways, and roadways.
These strategic developments position the Dar es Salaam Port as a critical driver of regional economic growth and international trade connectivity.
