ACT Wazalendo Chairman Announces Presidential Bid for Zanzibar’s 2025 Election
Zanzibar’s First Vice President, Othman Masoud Othman, has officially declared his intention to run for the Zanzibar presidency in the upcoming 2025 general election. During a press conference, Othman emphasized his commitment to transforming the island’s political landscape and addressing critical governance challenges.
Critiquing the current administration, Othman highlighted significant concerns about corruption in public funds and development project tenders. He pledged to bring transparency and accountability to Zanzibar’s governance, drawing inspiration from successful island nations like Mauritius and Singapore.
“We enter this new year with one goal—to rescue Zanzibar from a government rooted in corruption, which has stolen the hopes of our economy and citizens’ rights,” Othman stated. He positioned 2025 as a “year of decisions” crucial for the island’s future development.
Othman also criticized the Government of National Unity’s progress, pointing out systematic exclusion of his party from key decision-making processes. He argued that the constitutional vision of cooperative governance has not been genuinely implemented.
The presidential hopeful emphasized focusing on broader economic interests and citizen well-being, promising to prioritize development, true freedom, and prosperity for Zanzibar. His candidacy is subject to his party’s internal nomination process.
With ten months remaining before the general election, Othman aims to communicate his vision of transformative leadership and challenge the current political establishment’s approach to governance.
