Zanzibar’s First Vice President Highlights Judicial Integrity During North Pemba Regional Court Groundbreaking
Zanzibar’s first Vice President Othman Masoud Othman emphasized that the true strength of the judiciary lies not in architectural beauty, but in its commitment to justice and integrity during the groundbreaking ceremony for the North Pemba Regional Court in Kinyasini, Wete District.
Speaking at the event, Othman stressed that citizens’ respect for the judicial system stems from its ability to provide genuine justice and resolve societal challenges, rather than from impressive physical structures. He described a court that fails to uphold justice as a “blunt sword without wisdom” and urged judicial professionals to maintain the highest standards of integrity.
The new court construction is part of a comprehensive government strategy to address long-standing infrastructure challenges in the judicial system. The project includes seven new court buildings across Unguja and Pemba, designed to improve working conditions and enhance public service delivery.
“These buildings will lose their meaning if citizens avoid them instead of seeking justice,” Othman warned, highlighting the importance of creating accessible and trustworthy judicial spaces.
The initiative aims to resolve critical issues such as overcrowding, dilapidated facilities, and inadequate accommodations for people with special needs. Specific projects include the construction of Micheweni and Mkoani District Courts, alongside the North Pemba Regional Court.
Othman condemned unlawful practices and emphasized that courts should serve as “schools of law” that protect citizens’ rights. The new facilities will accommodate various stakeholders, including government lawyers, police, social welfare services, and legal aid providers.
The groundbreaking ceremony was part of the 61st anniversary celebrations of the Zanzibar Revolution, themed “Peace, Unity, and Solidarity for Our Development,” symbolizing the ongoing commitment to institutional improvement and societal progress.
