Zanzibar President Launches Revolutionary First Flyover, Signals Major Infrastructure Transformation
Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Mwinyi has unveiled an ambitious infrastructure project, marking a groundbreaking moment for the island’s urban development. During the ceremonial groundbreaking at Mwanakwerekwe, the president confidently announced a series of transformative infrastructure initiatives set to reshape Zanzibar’s transportation landscape.
“We’re just getting started,” Dr. Mwinyi declared, emphasizing the government’s commitment to substantial urban infrastructure development. He playfully noted the evolution from “Hussein mabati (roofing sheets) to Hussein maflyovers,” highlighting the significant progress in infrastructure investments.
The landmark flyover project represents a $19 million investment spanning 100.9 kilometers of urban roadways. Currently 80% complete, the structure will feature impressive specifications: 72 meters long, six meters high, and 18 meters wide, with two upper lanes and carefully designed pedestrian walkways.
Technical details reveal the project’s complexity, with 48 pillars strategically constructed to ensure structural integrity. The initiative directly addresses growing traffic congestion, demonstrating the government’s proactive approach to urban mobility challenges.
The project extends beyond a single flyover, with plans to construct 897.2 kilometers of roads across Unguja and Pemba. Additional infrastructure developments include bridges in Chwaka, Chakawe, and Uzi Ngwamba, each spanning two kilometers.
President Mwinyi emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “This is the kind of leadership that leaves a lasting legacy.” He urged citizens to support development efforts and maintain infrastructure by avoiding unauthorized construction near roadways.
The flyover is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion at critical junctions, marking a pivotal moment in Zanzibar’s urban infrastructure transformation.
