Post-Election Violence Case in Mwanza Adjourned to November 26
Mwanza – A case involving 11 defendants charged in connection with violence following Tanzania’s October 29, 2025 general election has been adjourned, with the next hearing scheduled for November 26.
The 11 individuals are part of a larger group of 172 people facing charges in Nyamagana District, Mwanza, related to incidents that occurred between October 29 and 31. The defendants were initially arraigned on Friday, November 7, at the Nyamagana District Court.
The accused face two counts of malicious damage to property for allegedly setting items on fire, contrary to sections 319 (a) and (b) of the Penal Code (Cap. 16, R.E. 2023). Additionally, they are charged with armed robbery under section 287A of the same legislation.
During today’s court session on November 17, the case appeared before Nyamagana District Court Resident Magistrate-in-Charge, Ramla Shihagilo. State Prosecutor Mahembega Elias requested an adjournment, stating that investigations remain incomplete.
Magistrate Shihagilo approved the prosecution’s request and rescheduled the matter for November 26. The defendants will continue to be held in remand custody, as the charges against them are non-bailable offenses.
Legal representatives from the Tanganyika Law Society Mwanza Chapter, who are defending the accused, were not present during today’s proceedings.
Additional defendants facing similar charges stemming from the same post-election disturbances are scheduled to have their cases mentioned on November 19, 20, and 21.
